Bliain an Chreidimh – Our Patron Saints Laochra an Chreidimh No.51.
Naomh Clare – She was born in Montefalco, Umbria, Italy in the year 1268. She was an Augustinian nun and abbess. Before she became a nun she was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis. She was declared a saint by Pope Leo XIII on December 8th, 1881. She came from a wealthy family and was daughter of Damiano and Lacopa Vengente. She had an older sister called Joan.
Clare reported having a vision of Jesus and that she helped Jesus carry the cross. Then he implanted the cross in her heart. The rest of her years she suffered in pain, yet she continued to joyfully serve her fellow nuns. Clare died on the 18th August 1308. When they removed her heart, they found a cross.
I picked Clare because it’s in my family. I also love the name Clare and I would like to find out what she did and how. (Ailbhe– Bunscoil an Chlochar)

The great majority of the early cross-inscribed stones on record from Kerry are located in one single area, the ancient territory of Corca Dhuibhne, which largely comprised the Dingle and Iveragh peninsula. Peninsular Kerry, is also the area which has the largest collection of cross-inscribed stones. Corca Dhuibhne is also that part of the county that has the smaller proportion of local authority-controlled graveyards relates to the nature of early medieval ecclesiastical sites there. In total, there are around 200 cross-inscribed stones and related monuments recorded from Corca Dhuibhne. Inscribed crosses of various forms occur on a variety of early medieval monuments in Co. Kerry, the largest group, however, comprises cross-inscribed slabs, examples can be found in Kildrum, Aglish, Garfinny, Ráithín Uí Thuaigh and Kinard.

Mass Rock at Coumduff, Annascaul
The Corca Dhuibhne Pastoral Area Mass in Coumduff, Annascaul will take place on Friday July 26th at 7:30pm. All parishioners are invited to pass on the word about this Year of Faith gathering. The Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Raymond Browne, newly ordained Bishop of Kerry who will preach on the night.
Please notify family and friends who may be holidaying at this time as they might take the opportunity to join with us in pilgrim prayer at a revered holy place in our West Kerry landscape.
This Mass Rock was used during the Penal Days for the celebration of Mass in this area. According to Fr. John Ashe in his book “Annascaul Revisited and Reviewed”, this is one of the best preserved and also one of the best authenticated Mass Rocks in existence. It is situated in a deep gorge at the rear of Loch Scaul, a locality which because of its sacred association has come down to us under the name of ‘Soggarth’ . Surrounded on every side by precipitous mountains, with only one possible avenue of approach, Soggarth provided an ideal hideout for the celebration of the Supreme, if forbidden, Act of Divine Worship. Very suitably shaped for its sacred purpose, the Rock is symmetrically rimmed, round to a depth of about 12 inches from the top, giving it a remarkable resemblance to a very large old time travelling trunk. Close by, at no great distance from the Rock, is ‘Tobareen na Comeena’ – the little Communion Well – where, tradition has it the priest secured water for use at Mass, and the faithful broke their fast after Holy Communion. The water in this well is said to be the purest and the coolest in all the parish.
Itinerary:
Annascaul Bridge – gathering from 6pm;
Annascaul Lake – 6.45pm (Walk to Mass Rock saying the Rosary). Mass Rock – Mass at 7.30pm
Return to Annascaul Lake – 8.15pm (Walk from Mass Rock saying the Rosary).
Annascaul Community Ctr – from 9pm, cupán tae etc.
NB: Please wear suitable footwear and clothing. (The Walk is fairly flat on an uneven road, it will take about 25mins each way.)
