Good Shepherd Sunday 25th April

Today, the fourth Sunday of Easter, is known as Good Shepherd Sunday because in the Gospel we hear Jesus speak of himself as the Good Shepherd who lays down his life for his sheep. That is why it is the day chosen as World Day of Prayer for Vocations to the Priesthood and Consecrated Life. Pope Benedict has written to us this year on the theme “Witness Awakens Vocations”. He cites the examples of the Prophets of the Old Testament dedicating their entire existence to bearing witness to God. Jesus, he says, is the “supreme Witness to God and to his concern for the salvation of all.” If you feel called to be a priest come to our information evening on Wed 12th May at 7pm. To book ring Fr. Liam 066 7133169 or Fr. Michael 087 6551902

Prayer for Vocations to the Priesthood

Lord Jesus Christ, Shepherd of souls, who called the apostles to be fishers of men, raise up new apostles in your holy Church. Teach them that to serve you is to reign: to possess you is to possess all things. Kindle in the hearts of your people the fire of zeal for souls. Through the intercession of St. John Vianney send us priests. Make them eager to spread your Kingdom upon earth. Grant them courage to follow you, who are the Way, the Truth, and the Life; who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer of the faithful. Lord Jesus, the Good Shepherd, grant those you call to priesthood the courage and generosity to say yes. Lord hear us.

Witness Awakens Vocations

In this week’s Irish Catholic newspaper, columnist Andrew O’Connell praises the efforts of lay people in Cork in promoting vocations and points out how we all have a responsibility to create a ‘vocations culture’ in parishes.  He writes, “This means that the parish, as a community of faith, should be actively nurturing, supporting and encouraging religious vocations.

We can be fairly sure that there are plenty of people being called to that way of life but due to the noisy and unsupportive culture in which we live many are not hearing that call or lack the confidence to respond.” His column can be found on the back page of this week’s Irish Catholic or online at: http://www.irishcatholic.ie/site/content/building-vocations-culture

The Irish Catholic also includes a very encouraging 4-page special where priests, sisters, brothers and seminarians share their vocation stories.  Several of the contributors mention the importance of the examples of faith they received in their home and in their parishes in bringing them to the awareness of their own vocations to follow Christ in priesthood or in the religious life.

Pope Benedict’s Message for the World Day of Prayer for Vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life is called Witness Awakens Vocations and can be found on our website at:

The Pope reminds us all – whatever our own calling in life – that by being faithful to our vocations and our faith, we will encourage others to follow His call:  [I]n order to foster vocations to the ministerial priesthood and the consecrated life, and to be more effective in promoting the discernment of vocations, we cannot do without the example of those who have already said “yes” to God and to his plan for the life of each individual. Personal witness, in the form of concrete existential choices, will encourage young people for their part to make demanding decisions affecting their future.
