St. Mark the Evangelist
St. Mark is said to be the son of Mary of Jerusalem whose home hosted meetings of the disciples. He is cousin of St Barnabas with whom he preached in Cyprus.
From early times, Mark has been considered the author of the first written Gospel (about 70 A.D.). He is thought to be the “John Mark” who accompanied Paul on some of his travels. Tradition says that he knew Peter and wrote down some of the things he learned from Peter. He is reported to be first Bishop of Alexandria (Egypt) where he was martyred under Nero c74 A.D. His symbol is the Winged Lion and he is patron saint of notaries, his own Feastday is on April 25th.
Mark is the shortest of the four Gospels, written in a “straight-from-the-shoulder” style. It has been our Sunday Gospel text over the past Year (B). The coming Year (C) will feature the Gospel of Luke.
One of the world’s most famous piazzas is in front of St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, Italy. It was named after Mark in 829 A.D. when Venetian agents stole the “body” of St. Mark from Alexandra in Egypt and brought it to Venice – although it is doubtful that this was actually Mark’s body.

Advent
“Advent is a time of waiting, conversion and of hope”
The Advent Wreath
Placing four candles on green fronds has become a symbol of Advent in may Christian homes, especially in Germanic countries and in North America.
The Advent wreath, with the progressive lighting of its four candles, Sunday after Sunday, until the Solemnity of Christmas, is a recollection of the various stages of salvation history prior to Christ’s coming and a symbol of the prophetic light gradually illuminating the long night prior to the rising of the Sun of justice.
Beannú Fleasc Aidbhinte
Beannaímid fleasc an tséasúir beannaithe seo, ciorcal gan briseadh de láithreacht Dé. Is geall le lámh é sínte amach go fáilteach chúinne agus chun an chine daonna. Solas é don saol go léir. Go labhra an fhleasc seo linn I gcónaí faoi Dhia atá farainn gach lá. Go n-osclaímid doirse ár gcroí do Dhia gach lá dar shaol. Go mbeannaí Dia uilechumhachtach sinn go léir, anois agus i gcaitheamh na hAidbhinte. AMEN
The Jesse Tree
Jesse was the father of the great King David of the Old Testament. He is often looked upon as the first person in the genealogy of Jesus.
In Church art a design developed showing the relationship of Jesus with Jesse and other biblical personages. This design showed a branched tree growing from a reclining figure of Jesse. The various branches had pictures of other Old and New Testament figures who were ancestors of Jesus. At the top of the tree were figures of Mary and Jesus. This design was used mostly in stained glass windows in some of the great medieval cathedrals of Europe. The French Cathedral of Chartres (which was dedicated in 1260) has a particularly beautiful Jesse Tree window.
We will be placing a Jesse Tree showing the history of salvation and the ancestors of Christ in the churches of our parish this year. It is our hope to involve the Confirmation Candidates of our Parish Primary Schools in preparing the decorations for the Jesse Tree and in explaining the Tree to our parishioners.
Our Jesse Tree will be presented by our Confirmation candidates at next weekend Masses on Saturday Vigils 6.15 and 8.00pm and Sunday 10am.
