‘Ní neart go cur le chéile’

Letter from Kokstad, South Africa

Dia dhibh, Well I have been here in Kokstad for 6 months now and am settling down to some extent although I am due to come home for Christmas and am looking forward to that very much. I am teaching Biology classes in four different schools, spending one day with each. On Mondays I go to BrooksNek which is about 10k outside Kokstad.
Brooks Nek is in the Eastern Cape, which is the former Transkaii. The Transkaii was a homeland during the apartheid era and was to some extent self-governing. There are 12 staff including the principal and they are all Xhosa (pronounced Cosa) apart from 2 Indians and 2 from Ghana. The learners are all Xhosa from the many villages in the surrounding hills. They are a very friendly staff and make me welcome. There are over 300 learners between three grades, 12,11 and 10. There are 15 doing Biology in Grade 12, about 60 in Grade 11 and over 100 in Grade 10 and all their results are very very poor. I don’t think I will make a big difference this year as the matric begins in October and the school year ends in November, but maybe next year. It’s nearly impossible to do much with the grade 10s anyway. The class is too big. There is barely space to stand at the top of the room and the blackboard is terrible. I have enquired about getting a better blackboard but things move slowly here. They need more classrooms. They have only 6 in the whole school. The school is down a really steep path from the main road. You drive nearly straight down the side of a mountain with your heart like jelly. The area is all mountains and valleys with little homesteads
and rondavels dotted around painted light blue. They seem to love the colour blue. These are all tribal lands and I was introduced to the chief on my first visit. The terrain reminds me of the Conair Pass or Brandon. This school would love to twin with an Irish school. I know that An Pobalscoil has great contacts with Lesotho but still I wonder if they or Castlegregory would be interested in twinning?  They need help and if they had 2 prefabs one for the Principal’s office and one
for the staff that would free up two rooms.…

to be continued next week.              Liz Uí hUigín.

Our Parish Mission 2010

Redemptorist Frs. Séamus Enright and Seán Duggan, Derek Meskell and Limerick priest Eamon Mac Giobún visited our Parish on Thursday last the 9th of September. They met with the Principals of our 6 Parish Primary schools, Coláiste Íde and An Pobalscoil and were heartened by the warm welcome they received as they continue to listen and plan our Parish Mission in November. As homes in Dingle town were visited in conjunction with our Neighbourhood Station Masses after Easter, Frs. Tomás and Bernard hope to visit all homes in Milltown and Annalack, Baile na Saor and Bánóg this week in preparation for our Mission which will take place from Sun the 7th of Nov. to Friday 12th.

Please pray OUR MISSION PRAYER

Heavenly Father,

We ask you to bless us,

As we prepare for our Parish Mission in November.

Open our hearts to Your grace,

That we may be more faithful

In following Your way.

Bless all families in our parish

At home and afar,

Especially those families

That are experiencing difficulties.

Bless the old, the young, the lonely,

The poor, the sick, the unemployed,

Those in sorrow, those in despair,

Those who have lost their way.

May Your love be upon us, O Lord

As we place all our hope in you. Amen.

Abair PAIDIR D’ÁR MISEAN

A Athair neamhaí

Iarraimid ort sinn a bheannú

Agus sinn ag ullmhú do Mhisean an Pharóiste i Mí na Samhna.

Oscail ár gcroíthe dod ghrásta

Go mbeimid níos dílse

Ag leanúint do shlí.

Leag go fial do bheannacht ar na teaghlaigh inár bparóiste

Ar ár bpobal sa bhaile agus i gcéin,

Go h’áirithe na teaghlaigh sin atá i gcruachás.

Beannaigh idir óg agus críonna, uaigneach

Bocht, breoite, iad siúd atá in isle brí,

Iad siúd a chaill a slí

Go dtitfidh do ghrá orainn, a Thiarna

Agus sinn ag cur ár ndóchas i dtaisce ionat. Amen
