Thought for the day: We are at the start of the new year and beginning again is an invitation to look in two directions. What happened for me in the last year, both in my ordinary life and in my life as a believer, a person of faith? For what do I ask forgiveness? For what do I give thanks? We also look forward and the new beginning gives us a chance to start again on the Way of discipleship. Both thanksgiving and renewal are to be found in today’s readings. The Gospel is in invitation to wake up, to keep watch, to live fully the present moment under God, in whom we live and move and have our being. Prayer: Wake us up, O God, at the start of a new year and rouse us from the slumber of the everyday that we may recognise you in every moment and in every person every day of our lives. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Pope Francis on X:  The hope of the world lies in fraternity! And the hope of a fraternal world is Christ, the incarnate Son, sent by the Father so that we may all become what we are, that is, children of the Father who is in heaven, and therefore brothers and sisters among ourselves.

2025, A Jubilee Year in the Church

Pope Francis has chosen the Jubilee theme “Pilgrims of Hope”. We are asked to treat the year ahead as a year-long pilgrimage seeking together to become more aware that truly Jesus Christ Our Saviour is with us each day, – as our help, strength and guide. When we speak of ‘Hope’ we mean ‘Hope in Jesus Christ’, Hope in our God, Father, Son and Spirit.

A Prayer for the New Year

As we begin a new year,

we wonder what it holds for us.

Let us put our hand in the hand of Christ, our Brother;

that will be better than a light,

and safer than a known way.

Lord, give us the kind of faith

that will enable us to live out joyfully

the mystery of our fragile human condition, which sees us suspended

between earth and heaven,

between time and eternity,

between nothingness and infinity

Prayer: Mayyou hitch your wagon to a star, a star of hope, the star of Bethlehem. May you not be afraid of the darkness of the world because Jesus is the light of the world. And when your earthly journey is over, may Christ welcome you into his heavenly kingdom.

Wishing all a very Happy, Joyful and Peaceful New Year. Áthbliain faoi shéan is faoi mhaise daoibh go léir.
