Charity Garden Open day in Dhu Varren Garden Milltown in aid of Recovery Haven Cancer Support House this Sunday August 25th 12 to 6pm. It promises to be a great day out for all ages, (children free). In this beautiful unique 2.5 acre garden with over 1000 plants from around the world. Refreshments and home baking also on the day.
The Kerry Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes has a few seats remaining. The Pilgrimage will be led by our new Bishop Ray Browne and will depart from Kerry Airport on Monday 2nd September. Lough Derg One Day Retreats
Lough Derg one day retreats recommence on 17th August.
A guided day of prayer, reflection and renewal. The morning includes Rosary and Way of the Cross as well as Prayers of Intercession and Healing of Memories.
The afternoon offers an opportunity for quiet time & personal prayer and concludes with the celebration of Eucharist.
Well recognised as a Sanctuary – a safe place Lough Derg offers a ‘Living With Suicide’ Workshop on Wednesday 25th September.
This day is for adults who have been affected by suicide, either through personal loss or with suicidal ideation, or for those ministering to the suicide bereaved or working in support services.

St. John the Baptist. Before John was born, an angel had announced, “Mary will rejoice at his birth.” John’s mother, Elizabeth, and Our Lady were first cousins, so Jesus and John were second cousins. John who was six months older than Jesus, lived in the suburbs of Jerusalem.
When they were children, Jesus and John probably visited each other and played together. They both grew up learning about the Temple in Jerusalem and the holy Law.
When they were about thirty years olds, John began preaching near the Jordan River, and baptizing those who repented. Jesus was among those who came to be baptized.
John had a special task of recognizing Jesus when He came. John told his own disciples to follow Jesus because Jesus much more important than he was. John was later beheaded by King Herod.
I like this name of John because it is in my family. Also, John is the patron saint of Lispole.

Séipéal agus Reilig Naomh Muire
A church was built on this site in 1812. In 1860 Clarissa Hussey, a member of a local wealthy land-owning family, made money available to the parish priest. Canon Daniel O’Sullivan, to build a new church.
This new church was designed by J. J. McCarthy, M.R.I.A. He was the architectural successor of Pugin and the leading exponent of the Neo-Gothic style at the time. The foundation stone was laid by David Moriarty, Bishop of Kerry, on St. Patrick’s Day, 17th March 1862 and the new Church of St. Mary’s was blessed and opened by him on Easter Sunday 1865. The red sandstone used on the exterior was quarried at Minard, about 16 kilometres to the east of Dingle. J. J. McCarthy also designed the adjacent Convent of the Presentation Sisters.
After 100 years this church needed major repair and the occasion was availed of to make the church more suited to the new norms for public worship introduced by the Second Vatican Council. In 1963 Canon Patrick Lynch engaged Andrew Devane of Robinson, Keefe and Devane, Chartered Architects, Dublin to plan and supervise this work. The limestone columns and gothic arches, which supported the old slate roof, were removed and replaced by the steel girders which now support a copper roof, the apex of which is 5 meters lower than the original apex. The plaster was removed from the inner surface of the walls to expose the very good quality random rubble masonry. A new sanctuary was designed with new altar, ambo and tabernacle plinth in limestone. These alterations and modifications changed the distinctive gothic character of the church, but they have given it the grandeur of simplicity and integrity.
In 1980 Canon Dermot O’Sullivan engaged H. M. Wallace, architect, Killarney, to continue the modernisation of the church. This included a new floor and new seats, specially designed, improved insulation, heating and lighting; installing electrical action in the organ, the tower bell and the tower clock – (only the face remains of the original clock donated by Lord Ventry in 1878); converting the disused side-chapels into confessional rooms. The church has seating accommodation for 700 people.
The Tabernacle Door’s Emmaus scene Chancel Crucifix and Stations of the Cross are by Enda King (1966). The Our Lady of Good Counsel or Madonna Group in bronze is by Imogen Stuart (1980). Canon Daniel O’Sullivan and Clarissa Hussey are buried under the floor of the church. Their graves are marked by a plaque on either wall at the front. Famine victim Fr. Michael Devine PP is buried in the Sacristy, a plaque honours his ministry.
The adjoining cemetery is the final resting place of Canon Thomas J. Lyne PP, Mons. John M. Ashe PP, Rev. J. Gerard Curran P.E., Canónach Pádraig Ó Loingsigh S.P., Canónach Séamus Ó Colbáird S.P.
