Bliain an Chreidimh – Our Patron Saints Laochra an Chreidimh No. 77.
Naomh Íde: St. Ita was born in Co. Waterford in 475. At the age of sixteen she moved to Killeedy meaning “Church of Saint Ita” in Co. Limerick, where she founded a small community of Nuns. The community group had a school for little boys. Her pupils are said to have included St. Brendan. Brendan visited her between his voyages. She dedicated herself to prayer and was said to have a gift for guiding people in holiness. During this period of Christianity, the Celtic Church was more advanced than other Churches at the time in recognising qualities of leadership in women and encouraging women. Ita passed away in 560 and her Feast Day is celebrated on January 15th. (Deirbhile – Bunscoil an Chlochair)

“Tar Chugainn, a Naomhspioraid Bheannaithe”
Colm
“An túisce a baisteadh é, tháinig Íosa aníos as an uisce, agus osclaíodh na flaithis dó, agus chonaic sé Spiorad Dé ag teacht anuas mar a bheadh colm agus é ag tuirlingt air.” (Matha 3:16)
Nuair a baisteadh sinn tuirling an Spioraid Naomh orainn chomh maith agus d’fhan sé linn mar threoraí.
Tar Chugainn, a Naomhspioraid Bheannaithe
Tar chugainn, a Naomhspioraid Bheannaithe;
Comhairligh sinn in am ‘s I dtráth;
Treoraigh sinn ar ród na beatha seo,
Is stiúraigh sinn go ríocht na ngrást.
(Pádraig de Brún, Veritas Hymnal, 110)
Parents of Young People
For me this area is crucial. A survey carried out by CMAC (the former name of Accord) a number of years ago identified the mother as the greatest influence in shaping people’s Christianity – not the bishop, or priest or anything that happens in the church building. We need to acknowledge where the most effective participation in Christian formation is taking place or has the potential, namely, the home – through parents or the school – through teachers. There is a huge challenge here. While many young parents remain committed to their faith and its practice, many others have drifted away from the Church. It is often when they experience the joy and wonder of new life in their own children that they become more aware of and open to the deeper mystery of life. For this reason, programmes involving parents in Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation are a high priority. These programmes will be supportive of the excellent work teachers do in schools and will hopefully be effective in revitalising the parents’ own faith and practice.
