Lonely Voices – Machnamh for Advent
The voice of John the Baptist was a lonely voice which many of his contemporaries ignored.
There are many lonely voices in our world.
Somewhere at this moment a child is crying –
crying for love or maybe simply for bread.
Somewhere a young person is crying –
crying for listening ear or an understanding heart.
Somewhere an old person is crying – crying for a visit or a word from his/her children.
There are thousand unheard cries in our world, coming from the victims of injustice and neglect.
Lord, help us to listen to these voices.
Above all, help us to listen to your voice,
whispering to us in the wilderness of our hearts,
telling us that we are loved by you, and that we are to love one another. (Flor McCarthy, SDB)
Soundness
Our Second Reading today prays ‘may God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through’. What does it mean to be ‘sanctified’, to be ‘made holy’? We suffer today from some very skewed ideas about those who are ‘holy’: the caricature is of people who are otherworldly, excessively serious, and who suffer from bouts of ‘holier-than-thou-ism’. To be holy is to be ‘whole’, ‘well-rounded’, exuberant with life (‘rejoice always’). To have hearts full of gratitude (‘give thanks in all circumstances’). In the words of Ronald Rolheiser, ‘the holiest person you know is the most grateful person you know’. (Salvador Ryan)
Teacht Chríost
Do ghlanas mo chroí anocht
amhail mhnaoi a ghlanfadh a teach,
roimh theacht dá leannán dá fios;
A Leannáin, ná téirigh thart.

Do leathas doras mo chroí
amhail fhear a dhéanfadh fleá,
ar theacht i gcéin dá mhac:
A Mhic, is álainn do theacht!
(Pádraig MacPiaras)
