Clerical Personnel Changes
It is with regret that Bishop Liam Ó Murchú informs us that our curate Fr Bernard Healy will be completing his service in the Parish of Dingle with effect from the 25th of July this year and will not be replaced due to a shortage of priests. It is expected that his new assignment will be announced during the first week of July.
From this date, Dingle will be served by one resident priest, Canon Tomás Ó Luanaigh. The parishes of Cahirciveen and Castleisland find themselves in a similar situation this year, and in recent years parishes such as Millstreet and Listowel have had to make a similar adjustment.
This will be a significant challenge for our parish and we will be relying on the co-operation of the clergy in the neighbouring parishes of the Corca Dhuibhne Pastoral Area, our Parish Pastoral Council and the goodwill of all our parishioners as we cope with this new reality. Inevitably this will involve adjustments to the timetable of Masses throughout the peninsula and other changes in the life and work of the parish. We invite the prayerful assistance of all parishioners at this time.

Why are bonfires lit in parts of the country on St. John the Baptist’s Eve?
Bonfires on this night developed from the mid-summer festival when the sun reaches its highest glory but then begins to wane. That is how John the Baptist understood his mission in preparing the way for Christ. ‘He must grow greater, I must grow less’ (John 3:30). John the Baptist was the light destined to give way to the light of Christ. In a neat piece of counterpointing, the birth of Christ is celebrated just after mid-winters’ day when the sun begins to return. Christ is the light come into the world as a tiny baby destined to grow. I remember an old lady who used to bless our bonfire on this night with the plant known as St. John’s Wort.

Midsummer
Mid summer is marked with the summer solstice of June 21st. Tuosist folk call it “the longest day of the year”. Across Europe and some Latin American countries Bonfire Night remains a special night of celebration marked with bonfires. The Gaelic word “teinne cnámh” or “bone fire” belies the ancient material used for combustion. The local usage “tine fhéil’ Eoil” stands for the midsummer ritual fire of St. John’s Eve which falls on June 23rd. The Church celebrates June 24th as the Birthday of St. John the Baptist.

International Eucharistic Congress

Eucharistic Congress Pilgrims
Over the past 2 weeks, we welcomed three foreign pilgrim groups to St Mary’s for Mass. Groups from South Africa (led by Fr Jerry Brown, a Lixnaw native), the Diocese of Honolulu, Hawaii and the Archdiocese of Toronto in Canada made their way to Dingle as part of their pilgrimage to Ireland for the International Eucharistic Congress.
