May Altar in Your Home
We invite every home to set up a simple May Altar during Our Lady’s Month. All children of this year’s Confirmation and Do This in Memory programmes were invited to create a Sacred Space at home. This would be a perfect setting for a May Altar by adding a statue / picture of Muire Máthair Dé and some fresh flowers / greenery from the field or garden.
Remembering Fr. Patrick Peyton’s mantra “The family that prays together, stays together”, may be a time for all of us to renew family prayer and the Rosary.
Ó ‘Mhuire Mháthair, mo mhíle grá thú,
mo choimirce chúnta in am gach gá thú,
mo dhochtúir leighis, tinn agus slán, tú,
agus n’urra breá beannaithe le Flaitheas
na ngrás thú.
(Ár bPaidreacha Dúchais: Diarmuid Ó Laoghaire, S.J.)
Lá Bealtaine
“The first of May, or Lá Bealtaine [May Day] as she called it, was very special. It was customary to get up before sunrise to bring in the ‘summer’. In her younger days she would bring in branches from the various trees and keep these in the house until the following year. When I was young my father continued that tradition, and if he wasn’t at home my grandmother made sure that we got to bring in the summer some hours before going to school. She used to recite the little dán:

Thugamar féin an samhradh linn,
[We ourselves brought the summer with us,
Thugamar linn é is cé bhainfidh dínn é?
We brought it with us and who will take it from us?
Thugamar féin an samhradh linn,
We ourselves brought the summer with us,
Samhradh samhradh bainne na ngamhna,
Summer summer the milk of calves,
Thugamar féin an samhradh linn,
We brought the summer with us,
Samhradh buí fé luí na gréine,
A yellow summer under the setting sun,
Thugamar féin an samhradh linn.
We ourselves brought the summer with us.
Cuileann is coll is trom is cárthann,
Holly and hazel and elder and rowan,
Thugamar féin an samhradh linn,
We ourselves brought the summer with us,
Fuiseog gléigeal Béal an Átha,
Shimmering bright ash from the Mouth of the Ford,
Thugamar féin an Samhradh linn.
We ourselves brought the summer with us].

This was a dán with several verses, but I cannot remember the remainder of the poem”. (Verling 2003:143-144). Béarrach Mná ag Caint – (Seanchas Mhairéad Ní Mhioncháin ag Martin Verling 1999)
