Ceal Físe, Meathann Muintir

Without a vision, the people perish (Proverbs 29:18)

In 1884, Cusack, Davin and Croke offered Irish youth a vision. First came the thought, followed by the word; then came the practical men who bridged the chasm between dream and deed.

I thought: Just as this silent stadium explodes in movement, colour and sound on All-Ireland Day, so also will the ideas and ideals of imaginative folk explode in the Ireland of tomorrow.

Without a vision, the people perish.

Dedication is no more, they say. The medium is the message. Material welfare is all. We eat of bread: we sup on wine. This is the age of the calculator and the computer alone.

I say otherwise.

Without a vision, the people perish.

Deep in the clay, mushrooms lie unrevealed for years. Suddenly they are everywhere in beauty. So also with the seeds of imaginative leadership.

Without a vision, the people perish.

Discipline there must be – joy too – and renewal of purpose. At the crossroads in the story of man or nation, finger-posts indicate the various ways ahead. On one finger-post is written: Dare to be yourself.

B’shin díreach an bóthar a roghnaigh Conradh na Gaeilge, Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann agus Cumann Lúthchleas Gael.

Kerry’s Green and Gold

You say tradition counts for little when two teams take the field,
I feel you are mistaken, lad, but the years will make you yield,
And when your hair is as grey as mine, and times have made you old,
Then you’ll invoke the truth I spoke of the Kingdom’s Green and Gold.

You cannot box or bottle it, nor grasp it in your hand,
But pride of race and love of place inspire a love of land.
Time honoured is our birthright, we’ll never break the mould,
It’s deep within the soul of us, who wear the Green and Gold.

Grey lakes and mountains soaring high, Mount Brandon’s holy hill,
The little church at Gallarus, our language living still,
The Skellig Rock, stout football stock, they can’t be bought or sold,
For our county’s fame, we play the game in the Kingdom’s Green and Gold.

And when the battle’s fiercest and the fortunes ebb and flow,
We’re still alive, we can survive, we never will let go,
For the spirit of our fathers and of stories yet untold,
Will lead us on to victory, in the Kingdom’s Green and Gold.

We savour Kerry victories, we salute a gallant foe and when we lose, there’s no excuse, we pick up our bags and go,
so raise your glass each lad and lass to our warriors brave and bold who can inspire us to the Sam Maguire in the Kingdom’s Green and Gold.

Enquiring about the Catholic Faith – RCIA

The parishes of the Corca Dhuibhne Pastoral Area – Annascaul, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh, Castlegregory and Dingle recently launched their joint RCIA programme. The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) is the programme of preparation for preparing interested non-baptised adults and non-Catholic Christians for full membership of the Catholic Church. The RCIA is not simply a course of instruction or teaching, but aims to be a process of initiation gradually introducing interested enquirers to the example and teaching of Jesus Christ and the life, teaching and practices of the Catholic Church. To assist in this process, a small group of people – Sheila O’Donnell, Geraldine O’Mahony, Barbara Prendergast and Fr Jim Sheehy – has been preparing to offer this programme in our Pastoral Area. Their responsibility will be to help and guide those interested on the journey of enquiry. Details from Parish clergy.  Ráth Dé ar an obair.

Introducing the New Missal

The New Missal will begin from the 1st Sunday of Advent, November 27th 2011.

When and why are we getting a new edition of the Roman Missal?

The new edition of the Missal will come into full use over a period of time between September and 27 November 2011, the First Sunday of Advent. The new edition is necessary for a number of reasons. Firstly, in the years since 1975 when our current Missal was published, a number of additional texts have been made available for use in the Mass. Theses include additional Eucharistic Prayers, some new Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Masses for over twenty new Feasts of Saints (for example, St. Pius of Pietrelcina / Padre Pio, Edith Stein, Maximilian Kolbe). The new material is to be included in the Missal so that it can be used in our celebrations.

Secondly, in 2001 the Holy See issued new directives for the translation of the Latin texts. Translators were asked to make the English text follow more closely the original Latin in its wording and structure. They were also asked to strengthen the biblical language and images in the texts and to reintroduce some theological vocabulary that may have been lost over the years.

Across the English-speaking world the new edition of the Roman Missal will therefore contain both new material and a new style of translation. (to be continued)
