Bliain an Chreidimh – Our Patron Saints
Laochra an Chreidimh No.37.
St. Luke was born in Antioch, Syria. He was a Gentile by birth and a physician by profession. According to a legend of the 6th century he was also a painter. St. Luke was an early convert to the Faith, and became the missionary companion of St. Paul, whom he accompanied on part of his Second and Third Missionary Journeys.
St. Luke also wrote the third of the four Gospels and the Acts of Apostles. He shows his skills in portraying living characters and he has remained an inspiration to painters for centuries. In his Gospel there is a steady movement of events from Nazareth to Jerusalem, whereas in the Acts it’s from Jerusalem to Rome.
The reason I picked this Saint is because he is the patron saint of doctors and painters and I would like to be a doctor when I am older. Also, his feast day is on October 18th, eight days before my birthday. (Máirtín – S Eoin Baiste.)

Dé réir an staraí Pádraig Ó Riain:
“St. Brendan’s fame rests mainly on the Navigatio Brendani, ‘the Brendan voyage’, arguably the most influential of all medieval Irish texts, which appears to have been written by an Irish peregrinus, perhaps as early as the ninth century, possibly even earlier. Inspired by the native vernacular tradition of iomramha, ‘ocean-voyages’, the text is preserved in more than 120 manuscripts of continental provenance, as well as in numerous medieval vernacular adaptations, beginning with an early twelfth-century French version, followed by German, Dutch, English, Italian, Occitan, Catalan and Norse re-tellings. The tale clearly captured the imagination of the medieval West, in the process creating a belief in the existence of a mythical St. Brendan’s Isle, featured in many medieval maps.” (Page 115: Dictionary of Irish Saints – Pádraig Ó Riain)

Dr. Breandán Ó Laoithe Easpag Luimní
Comhghairdeas ó chroí le Dr. Breandán Ó Laoithe a ornóidh mar Easpag Luimní an Domhnach seo chaite. Ad multos annos.
In this Year of Faith we all do well to reflect on what he shared – “I hope that those who are clinging onto faith by their fingertips will find in us some support that they can cling on. We need to share with them that we too are journeying in faith; we too are at times clinging on with our finger tips. I think we can find each other in that clinging. We can find each other in that search.
There is going to be a greater sense of commitment from those who are practising. I think we will have a more alive, more vibrant faith.
I think the Spirit today is pushing Christianity to a more complete experience. It is not enough to simply believe or to do charitable works; we have also got to love one another. It is in communities that we see that happening that we will see light in the future.”
