Laochra an Chreidimh II – Patrons
Naomh Philomena: Ciallaíonn an t-ainm Philomena ‘filia luminis’ sa Laidin nó ‘iníon an tsolais’ sa Ghaeilge. Rugadh Naomh Philomena sa bhliain 291 AD sa Ghréig. Tá sí mar naomh phatrún ar leanaí beaga. Níl mórán eolais mar gheall uirthi agus a saol. Fuair sí bás sa bhliain 304 AD. Bhí sí trí bliana déag d’aois nuair a maraíodh í. Mairtíreach ab ea í. Tháinig siad ar a tuama sa bhliain 1802. Bhí dearmad déanta uirthi ar feadh na céadta bliain ach tar éis dóibh teacht ar a tuama thosnaigh a lán míorúiltí ag tarlú.
Dhein an Pápa Gregory naomh aisti sa bhliain 1837. Deineadh é seo de bharr na míorúiltí a tharla tar éis a báis. Cuid des na siombail atá ag Naomh Philomena ná an lile, an solas, an t-ancaire agus an saighead.
Phioc mé an t-ainm Philomena mar b’shin an t-ainm a bhí ar mo mháthair chríonna a mhair i gCo. Laoise. Cailleadh í sa bhliain 2005 nuair a bhíos dhá bhliain d’aois. Bhíodh an t-ainm Philomena an-chomónta sa tír seo agus cloistear an t-ainm ‘Phil’ go minic.

An tSeachtain Mhór
Passion Sunday (Palm Sunday) Holy Week begins on this Sunday with the commemoration of the entrance of the Lord into Jerusalem. The palms are blessed and should be taken home, where they will serve as a reminder of the victory of Christ. Next year, they will be burned and placed on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday.
Mass of Chrism: The Bishop consecrates the holy oils used in the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, Ordination and Anointing of the sick during the year.
Spy Wednesday when visiting Priests will hear confessions in Lios Póil at 7.30pm.
Easter Triduum The Fathers of the Church saw this as a unitive commemoration: St Augustine spoke of ‘the most holy triduum of the crucified, buried & risen Lord’.
Holy Thursday This Mass is, first of all, the memorial of the institution of the Eucharist. The tradition of washing the feet is maintained. The Altar of Repose for the reservation of the Blessed Sacrament that will be distributed in Communion on Good Friday, should be prepared and adorned in such a way as to be conductive to prayer and meditation. The faithful are encouraged to spend some time at the Altar of Repose during this night, before the Blessed Sacrament. After the Vigil it becomes an Easter Garden.
Good Friday Celebration of the Lord’s Passion. On this day when ‘Christ our passover was sacrificed’ (1 Cor 5:7), the Church meditates on the Passion of her Lord, venerates the Cross, commemorates her origin from the side of Christ on the Cross, and intercedes for the salvation of the whole world. On this day, in accordance with ancient tradition, the Church does not celebrate Eucharist; Holy Communion is distributed to the faithful during the celebration of the Lord’s Passion. Devotions, such as the Way of the Cross are encouraged today.
Holy Saturday is known as “the mother of all Vigils”.
