Corpus Christi 2013 / Neighbourhood Station Masses
In preparation for our annual Corpus Christ procession on June 2nd 2013 the neighbourhood Station Masses in town will begin with Mass for the residents of Main Street on this Thursday April 4th at 7.30pm in the Temperance Hall, Main Street. Consequently, there will be no Mass on these Thursdays in St. Mary’s Church, as these Masses are open to all parishioners in preparation for Corpus Christi Sunday June 2nd.

Anam Cara – monthly support meeting, Wednesday 3rd of April 2013, 19:30 to 21:00 at the Silver Springs Hotel in Tivoli Cork. This event is free, open to all bereaved parents. Each Anam Cara support group has a bereavement therapist present to answer questions parents may have.
Recovery Haven is having a coffee morning for carer’s of people with cancer, we are hoping to identify carer’s needs with a view to starting a support group to provide a safe caring environment. Saint Ellen – For my Confirmation name I chose the name Ellen, which is another name for Saint Helena. Saint Helena was born in Drepane, not far from Rom, in the year248AD. She became a Catholic at an old age. Her son, Constantine, was the emperor and he declared that they were ‘A Catholic Empire’. Several years later, she went on a journey to Jerusalem to search for the ‘True Cross’ – the cross that Jesus Christ was crucified on. When they got there they found 3 crosses. But they weren’t sure which one was the right one. So they brought a local woman who had been very sick to see the crosses. When she touched the first and second crosses, nothing happened, but when she touched the third cross, she miraculously recovered. Saint Helena died in the year 328AD, aged 80.
I chose Ellen because I admire her adventurous spirit at such an old age. I also chose the name because my nan’s name is Eileen.

St John the Apostle was born in 6AD. He was the son of Zebeede and Salome and brother of James son of Zebeede. The Gospel according to John differs considerably from the synoptic Gospels. John died when he was one hundred years old.
John the Apostle was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. He was the son of Zebedee another of the Twelve Apostles and ultimately died of natural causes in great old age in Ephesus. The Church Fathers consider him the same person as John the Evangelist, John of Patmos and the Beloved Disciple. The Church Fathers generally identify him as the author of five books in the New testament. John probably knew and undoubtedly approved of the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. John perhaps employed different scribes to record his several works and he would have dictated his words to the scribes.
I picked this name because it’s a popular name and there’s a St. John’s Day. St. John’s Day is celebrated on the 24th of June all around Europe. It is celebrated in a particular lively fashion in Lithuania. I’m from Lithuania and the 24th of June is celebrated by jumping over bonfires and floating floral wreaths on water to greet the rising mid-summer’s sun. Another reason I picked this name is because it’s my granddad’s name. He passed away a few years ago. I remember him well and I say a prayer for him sometimes. Picking this name will help me to remember him always.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)
We would like to offer our congratulations to Andrina McLeod, who will be received into full membership of the Catholic Church and of the Sacred Heart Parish, Annascaul at the Easter Vigil celebration of the Lord’s Resurrection this Saturday evening at 8:30pm.
Over 18 months ago Andrina joined the RCIA Group meeting weekly, 7.00pm to 8.30pm at An Díseart where she embarked on a ‘journey of faith,’ initially to enquire into and learn more about the Catholic faith; then having discerned and decided that she was being called to become a full member of the Catholic Church committed herself to a more formal period of instruction and formation in the faith; which was Scripture based led by members of the RCIA team, on a faith sharing basis. A process that will reach its climax this Saturday night when Andrina, who is a baptised member of the Church of Scotland, will, after a brief profession of faith, be accepted as a full member of the Catholic Church through the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist.
As we welcome Andrina we offer her the assurance of our prayers and support on her ongoing journey of faith within the Catholic Church, while at the same time valuing the gifts that Andrina is so ready and happy to witness to for the enrichment of the Church and her local community.
The RCIA group will continue to meet and would welcome anybody who feels the need or the call to enquire into or learn more about the Christian faith and the Catholic Church. On reading this if you know of anybody who you feel may be interested suggest to them to contact, or ever better introduce them to your local Parish Priest who will be very happy to meet them and introduce them to the RCIA group representing the parishes of the Corca Dhuibhne Pastoral Area.
Aiséirí Chríost in our Christian Heritage
When we speak of the Last Judgement we are more inclined to think of people being condemned to Hell rather than the blessed entering Heaven. Yet the whole purpose of creation, Redemption and God’s Providence, is that all should be among the blessed entering Heaven. Yet the balance must be struck. The Judgement is an article of Faith. This Judgement has featured in many famous paintings, the most notable one being that of Michaelangelo’s. But in the Irish High Crosses the Last Judgement finds artistic expression of great depth. In Muiredach’s Cross, in the Last Judgement scene, Christ stands holding a cross in one hand and a sceptre in the other. Above him is a bird, a Phoenix, the symbol of the Resurrection. An angel blows the last trumpet. Below Christ, St. Michael is shown weighing souls and thrusting his spear in the mouth of a demon who is trying to upset the balance. On one side is the company of the blessed, singing. On the other side the damned are being driven into Hell by the devil brandishing a trident. Angels hold a book … the Book of Judgement. We must find ourselves rejoicing with the blessed-rejoicing with the Risen Christ.
