Mission Appeal in Kerry Diocese 2014
We welcome OLA Sr. Julie Doran, Cork to our parish this weekend October 4th/5th to promote Mission Awareness. The Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Apostles was founded in 1876 and are dedicated to spreading the Good News through service and witness to their lives, particularly in Africa. Today the OLA Sisters work in 19 countries in the African continent, Europe and South America. The promotion of women and the care of the marginalised in society is a particular priority in their apostolate. Led by Christ’s message to “bring good news to the poor”, the Sisters strive to build a more just and caring world through education, healthcare, interreligious dialogue, care of the Earth and involvement in non violent action for justice.
OLA Sisters thank the people of the Irish Church for their contributions in so many ways. Today they invite you to continue that support by:

Cnoc a’Chairn Famine Graveyard
Some years back Monsignor Padraig Ó Fiannachta organised a clean-up of the Famine Graveyard, installing gates and improving the entrance from Chapel Lane; also he arranged Mass to be celebrated in the Graveyard on All Souls’ Day, which has become an annual event.
It was his intention to develop the entrance further and make the Graveyard more accessible and also to do whatever was necessary and permissible to give the Graveyard, which tells the story of such an important, tho’ tragic, period of our local history and heritage, the prominence it deserves within our Community.
With this in view a ‘working group’ was set up last year to discuss, with the HSE, trustees of the Graveyard, the Kerry County Council and local farmers, the possibilities available in making the Graveyard more presentable and more accessible in developing the entrance through the Commonage at the top of Chapel Lane.
Thanks to the support of all concerned work should begin during the week on developing the entrance; also, a lot of repair work needs to be done to the Graveyard walls and the ground. As a local initiative we are hoping that members of the local community will become involved and support the project. The work will be conducted under the supervision of a member of the ‘working group’, archaeologist, Mícheál Ó Coileaín. If you would like to be involved or would like to know more about the project, contact An Díseart: 9152476 or ring Fr. Jim Sheehy at 086 262 5498; Pat Hanafin at 086 224 1064 or Breandán Ó Ciobhán at 087 988 3940.
Lectio Divina (Divine Reading)
On Tuesday next, 7th of October, 7.00 to 8.00pm, we will begin, once again, the Lectio Divina weekly meetings to reflect on, and share our thoughts and prayers on, the Gospel or one of the Readings of the following Sunday. In his recent Exhortation “The Joy of the Gospel” Pope Francis strongly recommends this form of prayer to develop a love for the Word of God and be nourished by it. The venue will be Fr. Jim’s office in the Diseart; through the red door at the right of the main entrance. All are welcome.
“Make us Channels of Peace in Iraq”
A member of St. Mary’s Parish Choir has received this urgent Prayer for Peace appeal from a missionary friend in Iraq. “He is part of a mission and ISIS has taken over the town they are in today. He said ISIS is systematically going house to house to all the Christians and asking the children to denounce Jesus. He said so far not one child has. And so far all have consequently been killed. But not the parents. The UN has withdrawn and the missionaries are on their own. They are determined to stick it out for the sake of the families – even if it means their own deaths. He is very afraid, has no idea how to even begin ministering to these families who have seen their children martyred. Yet he says he knows God has called him for some reason to be his voice and hands at this place at this time. Even so, he is begging prayers for his courage to live out his vocation in such dire circumstances. And like the children accept martyrdom if he is called to do so. She asked me to ask everyone we know to please pray for them.”
