Temperance Sunday – March 2nd 2014
Balance is a much more acceptable word. Perfect balance is required before taking a penalty or when taking a conversion; the balancing act of parents delicately trying to guide their teenagers through life, while praying at the same time that they will end up as their friends in adult life. Balance in life is the key to health and happiness. It is quite acceptable to mention balance and limitations in order to protect the environment. However the hackles rise when balance is used in the context of alcohol. ‘Kill-joy’ comes up on people’s screens. I believe that climate is changing. Attitudes towards alcohol consumption and the hard sell of the ‘Drinks Industry’ are being revisited. The recen
t disassociation by a Students’ Union of itself from the ‘Drink Aware’ campaign, which is substantially funded by the ‘Drinks Industry’, is a space to watch.
‘Responsibly’ – ‘Drink Alcohol Responsibly’ – I never thought that was good advice to an alcoholic! Family and friends would not think so either.
The emphasis is on ‘Drink Alcohol’! ‘Responsibly’ is after the promotion of ‘Drink Alcohol’. The debate is beginning and this is to be welcomed.Usually balance comes to the fore in our thought process once we allow ourselves time to consider the consequences of our actions. Right judgement allows desire to find a natural balance in an appetite-driven world.
Listening in quiet prayer to God speaking to my heart, gradually unfolds the prudent, balanced mind leading to courage to do the right thing, to act justly to myself and others. Reflective prayer discovers Jeremiah 31:32. ‘I will place my law within them and write it in their hearts’: while acknowledging Mark 14:38, ‘The Spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.’ Don’t mention temperance, it is a foreign language! Don’t mention the Catechism! – ‘Temperance ensures the will’s mastery over instinct and keeps desire within the limits that are honourable’. CCC, 1809. Why not lead ourselves and all joyfully to the definition in the Catechism through listening to God speak to our heart? (Intercom: Bishop Eamon Walsh)
“The Joy of the Gospel” Lenten Talks at An Díseart

The series of Talks by Fr. Jim Sheehy begin on:
Mar. 6th: Lent – this Joyful Season – 1st Lenten Preface. 13th: Evangelii Gaudium – Pope Francis’ Dream.
20th: Evangelii Gaudium – The New Evangelization.
27th: Evangelii Gaudium – The Parish.
April 3rd: Evangelii Gaudium – The Poor.
10th: Evangelii Gaudium – Spirit Filled Evangelizers.
Everyone welcome. Talks will be followed by discussion and prayer and cup of tea. There is no charge but a donation to An Díseart would be appreciated to cover costs of light and heat. A limited number of copies of Evangelii Gaudium are available in An Díseart.
