Nanó Nagle (1718- 1784)
Nano Nagle, the eldest of seven children, was born into a wealthy family in Ballygriffin, near Mallow, Co. Cork, in 1718. Christened Honora, she was always affectionately know as Nano.
In those years, Catholic schools were forbidden under the penal laws, so Nano’s early schooling was at a ‘hedge’ school, so called because the schools were often held in the open. Irish families who could afford the hedgemaster’s fee sent their children to these schools, where Irish Poets, scholars, storytellers and musicians secretly taught Irish history and tradition and told stories of the great Irish families. The schools were strictly illegal, and like the other children Nano took her turn to act as lookout in case officers of the Crown might encroach on the class.
At the age of seventeen, Nano and her sister Ann were sent secretly to France to finish their formal education. The girls had an uncle there who had been exiled for his part in the Jacobean wars. Nano was talented, sophisticated and wealthy, and in her own words ‘a lover of dress and vanity’. For this high spirited, ‘thoroughly modern’ girl, as she described herself, Paris was a social whirl. Then, homeward bound in her carriage one morning after a ball, Nano saw a group of poor working people waiting outside a church for early Mass. She was struck by the contrast between their lives and hers, and realised the superficiality of the lifestyle she was living. There and then she decided to make Christ her example. Nano entered a convent in France, to pray for Ireland, but she didn’t settle there and soon returned home.
Seven Inner City Hedge Schools
She began teaching – in secret, because it was forbidden for Catholics to do so – and soon had founded seven schools for poor children in Cork city, risking her freedom, fortune and family in doing so. She found a champion in her uncle.
Presentation Order
Nano and three others founded their Presentation Order on Christmas Eve 1775. That year they opened their first convent. In 1791 the nuns adopted the name of the Presentation Sisters and Pope Pius VII raised this congregation of teaching Sisters to the status of a religious Order in 1800. Nano was out day and night on the streets of Cork, helping the poor, the homeless, the sick and the elderly. The figure of Nano, lighting her way with a lamp in the darkness, became the enduring image of her Order.
A pamphlet of the Presentation Order records that: ‘She saw the greatest need of the people of her day was liberation from poverty’. The strain of these efforts told on her: she died from tuberculosis at the age of 66, in 1784. She left an extraordinary legacy of education, as well as a wonderful, living example of Christ’s message. Her Order’s schools touched four continents – Europe, America, India and Australia.
