Mother’s Day 2011

Mother’s Day is celebrated this Sunday, the Fourth Sunday of Lent. The custom of celebrating this day began in England more than 400 years ago when once a year people visited the parish church of where their mother was born. While they were visiting the church they also visited their mothers. Travelling was not easy at that time so this visit became a very special occasion. This day came to be called Mothering Sunday or Mother’s Day, and is always celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent in Europe. In the United States of America and other parts of the world they celebrated it on the second Sunday in May. On this day the Church remembers Mary the mother of Jesus in a special way.

Beannacht na Máthair

Dear Lord, we who are mothers need your help.

You have placed in us the care of our families.

Give us the strength and patience to cope with the many ups and downs of family life.

Grant us the grace to be deeply thankful for its many laughs, joys and blessings.

Let our children come to know of your love through our love for them.

Help us as we try to make ours a home where love dwells, a home like that of Jesus, Mary and Joseph in Nazareth.

When we fail each other and when we hurt each other, soften our hearts so that forgiveness and reconciliation come quickly and easily.

Protect this family, Lord, and let it flourish in your light and in your love.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Rath Dé ar ghach máthair.

Lent 2012

The Sunday of the man born blind presents Christ as the light of the world. The Gospel confronts each one of us with the question: “Do you believe in the Son of man?” “Lord, I believe!” (Jn: 35. 38), the man born blind joyfully exclaims, giving voice to all believers. The miracle of this healing is a sign that Christ wants not only to give us sight, but also open our interior vision, so that our faith may become ever deeper and we may recognize him as our only Savior. He illuminates all that is dark in life and leads men and women to live as “children of the light”.

Annual Altar Servers’ Outing

Our Servers were guests of the Parish at last Friday’s (April 1st) I.N.E.C Teen Spirit Matinee Concert. The 220 strong performers – including 15 students from Coláiste Íde, performed before a packed centre for over two hours including Christian and modern music and song. Next stop Cork Opera House.

Reflections on Teen Spirit and Cathedral Visit

  1. 1. What impressed me about the 220 performers was … “they were all together … the singing was great … their love and hard work … the dancing … lovely costumes … they never made a mistake … time, effort and talent – enthusiasm and skill … fantastic moves and full of confidence …”
  2. 2. Favourite Teen Spirit Song … “The Flood … Is this the Way to Amarillo … You’ll Never Walk Alone … Bridge Over Troubled Waters … A Íosa … We are the World … Sweet Caroline … Salm 22 – Don’t Stop Believing …”
  3. 3. What I learnt from the show … “if you think you have a talent use it … one day I might be able to sing on stage … singing is good and it’s free … is that I might be on the show … God always loves you … not to hate yourself … good, organised and enjoy what they do, how many modern songs show our desire for God …”
  4. 4. How to improve the show … “not to have as much slow songs … hiper music … a bit more songs from the charts … more choral/Gregorian music … to dance a bit more … more fast No. 1 pop songs … nothing wrong with it … no improvement needed …”
  5. 5. What struck me about St. Mary’s Cathedral … That it’s so beautiful … the Spire … huge … so big and interesting … amount of history … how big it was … the stained glass windows .. testimony to generations of Faith … everything …”

Mol an óige agus tiocfaidh sé.
