Bliain an Chreidimh – Our Patron Saints Laochra an Chreidimh No. 69.
St. Alexander – I chose Alexander as my name because he became a Bishop in a Diocese where Faith had died. Clergy and laity knew little about scripture and Church teachings. With the help of three friends, he inspired the people to new Faith, corrected abuses and rebuilt broken down churches. He founded colleges and seminaries.
I also chose Alexander as my name because I really like the name. (Christopher – Bunscoil Iognáid Rís)
Church teaching on Marriage Reaffirmed
Bishop Denis Nulty, Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin and a member of the National Executive of ACCORD Catholic Marriage Care Service, responding to the announcement of a same-sex referendum in 2015 said: “Married love is a unique form of love between a man and a woman which has a special benefit for the whole society.
With others of no particular religious view, the Church regards the family based on marriage between a woman and a man as the single most important institution in any society. To change the nature of marriage would be to undermine it as the fundamental building block of our society. The Church will therefore participate fully in the democratic debate leading up to the referendum and will seek with others to reaffirm the rational basis for holding that marriage should be reserved for the unique and complementary relationship between a woman and a man from which the generation and upbringing of children is uniquely possible.
The debate at the heart of the referendum announced by the Government is not about equality or about the false separation of a religious view of marriage from the civil view of marriage. It is about the very nature of marriage itself and the importance society places on the role of mothers and fathers in bringing up children.”

A Cheer for Nano
We were on our way to the Mount Olives when the news arrived that Nano Nagle, foundress of the Presentation Sisters, had been declared Venerable by Pope Francis. The announcement was greeted with a hearty cheer. The Presentation Sisters in our group were congratulated as though they had managed a team to All-Ireland success. The news about Nano might give fresh encouragement now to the promotion of the causes of other great Christian Irish women and men.

Multi-Intentional Masses 2014
Dingle Parish Pastoral Council has taken the decision to make an alteration to our practice of Multi-Intentional Masses in St. Mary’s Church. As from Saturday January 4th 2014, we are offering parishioners the possibility of booking a Shared Mass on the occasion of the 8pm Vigil Masses of our Saturdays and Holydays instead of the Fridays as is our present practice. We remind you that the recommended Diocesan Mass offering of €20 is given to the celebrant and all extra contributions go directly to the nominated charity of the Bishop of Kerry which is the Sick and Retired Priests of our Diocese Fund.
NB: Bookings for Masses in our Parish for 2014 will be received as from Monday 18th November when the Diary for 2014 will be available. Office Hours: Mon., Wed.; Thurs., Fri. 2-6pm and all day Saturday.
Syria and Philippines’ Super Typhoon Appeal
The damage from Typhoon Haiyan is catastrophic. The city of Tacloban in Leyte was particularly hard-hit, with widespread destruction and loss of life reported. Caritas Philippines estimate that over 10,000 people have been killed and 600,000 have been displaced from their homes. Tacloban city is without power, water and food.
The United Nations estimate that almost 10 million people have been affected.
This is a major humanitarian crisis and Trócaire is responding with our Caritas partners – we have already committed €100,000 to support their work. We are also supporting the work of Irish missionaries in the affected regions.
Irish public donations will be used to provide water, food, shelter and medicines to those who are most affected. According to Fr. Edwing Gariguez of Caritas, Philippines: “It’s a great catastrophe, our emergency planning is underway. It’s the strongest and biggest storm that has hit the country. It’s hit an area already devastated by an earthquake. It’s a really big calamity”.
In Syria, over 8.4m people – approximately half of whom are children – are in need of humanitarian assistance. Approximately 5.8 million people have been forced to abandon their homes, with 2.1 million people seeking refuge in the neighbouring countries of Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq and Egypt. More than 50% of registered refugees are children.
With Caritas, in response to the crisis, Trócaire has been delivering vital emergency aid since 2011 to over 273,000 people in Syria and the neighbouring countries. More information from www.trocaire.org
