Bliain an Chreidimh – Our Patron Saints Laochra an Chreidimh No.61.Tobar Mhichíl
Tobar Mhichíl or Saint Michael’s Holy Well is located at Ballymore West (Báile Móir Thiar). This spring well is now surrounded by a concrete wall. A small cross inscribed stone stands on the parapet of a bridge adjacent to the holy well.
A pattern was formerly held here on Michaelmas Day and rounds continue to be made by a number of people. At one time this well was a most important site as the monks who used to land at the cove in Ballinskelligs came to this holy well to fill their leather water pouches before continuing their pilgrim journey to Teampall Geal and from there to Kilmalkedar and onwards along the Saints’ Way, which led eventually to the summit of Mount Brandon and the completion of their pilgrimage.
(The Great Book of Kerry: Seán Quinlan. Vol 2)

The name, Sceilig Mhichíl, comes from the tradition that St. Michael the Archangel appears here with all the Heavenly Host of Angels in order to help St. Patrick banish the serpents from Ireland. It ranks with Mont St. Michel in Normandy, St. Michael’s Mount in Cornwall and Monte Gargano in Italy as one of the great high places and coastal sites associated with St. Michael.

Bishop de Brún will visit Dingle Parish on Sat Sept 28th. Following the Aifreann at Coláiste Íde at 12noon, he will be chief celebrant at the 8pm Vigil Mass in St. Mary’s Church. As this will serve as the Enrolment ceremony for all Confirmation candidates they are requested to bring their signed Enrolment / Clárú form and sit in the front seats at St. Mary’s, together with their parents. Please be seated by 7:45pm. Bishop de Brún will confer Pope Francis’ Apostolic Blessing on both Michael O’Connor and Celsus Sheehy in acknowledgement of their dedicated service to St. Mary’s for over half a century. Their building of our wonderful Christmas Crib each Advent has always being seen as a real Dingle blessing.

Séipéal an Chroí Ró-Naofa, Clochar na Toirbhirte / An Díseart. The Chapel of the Sacred Heart is a neo-gothic gem, in which architect J.J. McCarthy (1817-82), son of a Kerry family that settled in Dublin, drew on the nineteenth-century revival of medieval architectural styles and infused them with Irish overtones. More than that, it is a sacred space, illuminated in the artistry of its stained-glass windows. The chapel was refurbished in the 1920’s under the direction of Mother Ita Macken, and completed with the installation of Harry Clarke’s windows, which Mother Ita commissioned at a cost of £1,000 in 1922. These beautifully crafted windows illustrate the life of Christ from his birth to his resurrection.
Fuinneog 1 – Tá sonraí an scéil an soiléir: an triúr saoi – nó rí, Gaspar, Melchoir agus Baltasar sa traidisiún Éireannach; táid smaointeach, ómósach, socair gleamshúileach. Tá Íosagán ag beannú lena láimhín, Seosamh go stuama aireach; ar chlé lastuas tá Aingeal diamhair de stíl ar leith Harry Clarke. Fuinneog 2: Baisteadh ár dTiarna.
Fuinneog 3: “Ligigí do na leanaí teacht chugam.”
Fuinneog 4: Seanmóir ar an Sliabh.
Fuinneog 5: Allas Fola ár dTiarna sa Ghairdín.
Fuinneog 6: Taibhsíonn Íosa do Mháire Mhaigdiléana.
The altar of the chapel is dedicated to the Sacred Heart, as is clear from the Sacred Heart, symbol of Christ’s love for us, neatly displayed on the tabernacle door and on the front of the altar table. The window directly behind the altar depicts the Apparition of the Sacred Heart to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. The altar was designed by R. M. Butler and sculpted by George Smith.
Butler designed the sanctuary also, decorating its walls with colourful Italian marble tiles. On the lower section of the walls are twenty-four panels adorned with special symbols, such as the oak tree, symbol of the Presentation Order. Other symbols displayed include the vine, the chalice, a Celtic cross, and symbols related to the Passion – the crown of thorns, nails, the spear and the sponge – which depict different aspects of Christ’s saving passion, death and resurrection, the great mystery of the Christian faith, which the Sisters celebrated and gave thanks for in their daily Eucharist.
