Bliain an Chreidimh – Our Patron Saints Laochra an Chreidimh No.53.
Saint Anna means grace. St. Anna was the mother of the Virgin Mary and the grandmother of Jesus. Her husband was St. Joachim. Her name is a version of the Hebrew name Hannah. An angel came to Anna and Jochaim and told them they were to have a child in God’s name. Her feast day is celebrated on the 25th of July. St. Anna is the Patroness of Brittany in France. She is also the Patron Saint of women in labour. She is represented holding the Blessed Virgin Mary in her lap, and who in turn carries the child Jesus in her arms. She is Patron Saint of miners, with Christ being compared to gold and Mary to silver.
St. Anna was hanged because she hid a priest, held secret Masses in her house and also, because of her Faith and her beliefs. She died at the age of 79.
I chose Anna as my Confirmation name because it’s my aunt’s name. (Liarosa – Bunscoil an Chlochar)

Garfinney Cemetery
Uninscribed stones were what most of the common peopled used to mark graves. Occasionally, simple initials or a cross have been carved on the stones, or early medieval monuments were re-used. Examples can be found in Garfinny graveyard.
Inscribed crosses of various forms occur on a variety of early medieval monuments in Co. Kerry. The largest group, however, comprises cross-inscribed slabs. These may be described as stones, either standing or recumbent, inscribed with a cross, and they appear to have been generally used as grave markers or memorials. Examples of this type are on record from many cemetery including Garfinny. It appears that there are 18 examples of plain linear crosses that may be broadly dated to the early medieval period inscribed on stone monuments in Kerry Local Authority (KLA) graveyards. Two of these are to be found in Garfinny Cemetery – one is a plain linear cross and the other is a linear cross with T-bar terminals. While none of these sculptures can be independently dated, T-bar terminals are a feature of crosses on the Cloon West pillars, for which a date in the sixth and eighty century has been proposed, and also occur on the seventh-century, triple-armed linear Latin cross inscribed on the Ardmoneel boulder.

Fómhar na Farraige 2013
A special céad míle fáilte to all who join us for our 11.30am celebration of Fómhar na Farraige or The Harvest of the Sea. We extend our thanks to those who help organise this annual liturgy, those who prepare and decorate the Church, those who supply the wonderful display of fish, all those who contribute items for the procession and for the decoration of the Church. Buíochas to all who play a special part in the Fishermen’s Mass as we offer our thanks to the Lord and ask His blessing on all whose livelihood depends on the sea. We welcome and wish long life to our new Harbour Master Mr. Nigel Collins and thank him for all his co-operation.
Those who bring up the gifts place before us symbols of the great harvest of fish and other products which come from the sea, as well as items representing different aspects of sea-faring life and marine activities. Others present the bread and wine which become the Body and Blood of Christ. Our readers, those who read prayers of the faithful and the reflection – proclaim the life-giving Word of the Lord.
Fómhar ár bhfarraige,
The bountiful, life-giving harvest of our seas.
Moladh go deo le Dia na Cruinne.
