The traditional white smoke from the Sistine Chapel on Wednesday last heralded the election of Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Cardinal Archbishop of Buenos Aires, as our new Pope. This son of a working class Italian immigrant family entered the Jesuit Order in 1958 and was ordained priest in 1969. Known to be a pastoral leader and servant powered by the Gospel spirit of compassion, humility and social justice his name choice of Francis signals his admiration of St. Francis of Assisi – Patron saint of ecology, animals, peace, merchants and of Italy.

Confirmation Day / Lá an Easpaig
Bishop Liam Ó Murchú will administer the Sacrament of Confirmation in St Mary’s at 11.00am on Friday March 22nd. Parents, Sponsors and Candidates are advised to arrive in good time, at least 15 minutes before the start. All parishioners are warmly invited to attend these celebrations and to support the confirmandi with their prayers. Bishop Liam asks that no photographs or recording take place during the ceremony. Naomh Francis of Assisi was born on November 26 1182. His dad (Pietro Bernardone) was a very wealthy man so everybody respected Francis. He had a very easy life and everybody loved him. No one cared if he was picky and if he was ill people would take care of him. No one minded if he day-dreamed during school. No one tried to control him or teach him. As Francis grew up he became the leader of a crowd of youths who spent their nights at wild parties. Thomas of Celano (Francis’s biographer) said “In most other respects an exquisite youth but he attracted to himself a whole retinue of young people addicted to evil and accustomed to vice”. Francis himself said, “I lived in sin” during this time.
Francis fulfilled every hope of Pietro’s, even falling in love with France. He loved the songs of France, the romance of France and especially the adventurous troubadours who wandered through Europe. And despite his dreaming, Francis was also good at business. But Francis wanted more …. More than wealth – but not holiness! Francis wanted to be a noble, a knight. Battle was the best place to win the glory and prestige he longed for. He got his first chance when Assisi declared war on their long time enemy, the nearby town of Perugia.
One day while riding through the countryside, Francis, the man who loved beauty, who was so picky about food, who hated deformity, came face to face with a leper. Repelled by the appearance and the smell of the leper, Francis nevertheless jumped down from his horse and kissed the hand of the leper. When his kiss of peace was returned, Francis was filled with joy. As he rode off, he turned around for a last wave, and saw that the leper had disappeared. He always looked upon it as a test from God … that he had passed.
I chose Saint Francis because my Grandfather’s middle name was Francis and because he was a noble and respected man. One of the other reasons I picked Francis is because he was the first person to get the stigmata. The holes in his hands and feet were the same that Jesus had. Saint Francis was also the first person to make a stable to honour the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ at Christmas and the first crib.

St. Clare of Assisi was daughter to Phavorino Sciffo, a noble knight. St. Clare was born in 1194. Her parents spoke to her very early of marriage, which gave her great affliction. On the 18th of March 1212 St. Clare ran away to join Francis of Assisi with her sister Agnes. He immediately made her a nun and sent Agnes and Clare to the church of San Damiano. She is now the saint of sore eyes, televisions, goldsmiths, laundry, embroiders, gilders, good weather, needle workers, Santa Clara Pueblo, telephones and telegraphs. She was amazing.
I picked the name Clare because I love the name Clare, I love television and I had something aggravating my eyes some time ago. Saint Clare is Patron saint of televisions, sore eyes and lots more. (Doireann – Bunscoil an Chlochair)

5. Simon of Cyrene Helps Jesus – Simon resisted until he learned how easy the yoke, how light the burden when carried for Christ. Never let our natural, human fear of pain keep us from the tasks we meet on our journey to eternal life. “They seized on a man, Simon from Cyrene, and made him shoulder the cross.” Lk 22:26
6. Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus – Veronica’s instinctive act of pity will be recalled forever. Anything we do for anyone Christ counts as done for Him. So never hesitate to do good to others whether they deserve it or not. “In so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it to me.” Mt. 25:40
7. Jesus Falls the second Time – Christ’s weakness made Him fall again, but He went on. When we weaken, when we falter and fall, our Savior knows from His own experience how hard our way is. He will be our strength, our helper in every difficulty.

8. Jesus Speaks to the Women of Jerusalem – Jesus did not think of Himself, he thought of others, of the sufferings His people would yet have to endure. Déantar Lá Fhéile Pádraig a cheiliúradh ar fud an domhain le mórshiúil agus taispeántais agus ainmnítear daoine agus áiteanna ina onóir. Insítear scéalta agus cantar amhráin faoi Phádraig, ach is annamh a thugann siad léargas dúinn ar an Duine féin.
Is sa dá dhoiciméad a scríobh sé féin, an “Confessio” agus an “Litir Chuig Coroticus” a fhaighimid léargas ar Phádraig mar fhear: (i) Le creideamh láidir; (ii) A thug maithiúnas dá naimhde; (iii) A rinne nascadh idir chultúir. In aois sé bliana déag bhí Pádraig ina sclábhaí ag aoireacht caorach ar thaobh sléibhe i bhfad óna chairde agus óna mhuintir. Bhí sé uaigneach, fuar, ocrach. Cad a dhéanfá dá mbeifeá sa riocht sin? Cad a rinne Pádraig? Deir sé féin gur chuir sé a mhuinín i nDia agus gur tháinig Dia i gcabhair air. Fuair sé misneach agus sólás agus bealach éalaithe sa deireadh.
